Insomnia is a San Diego-based grunge rock band known for their evolving sound that seamlessly blends the raw intensity of classic grunge with experimental elements of pop and noise. Founded by Noah Lares, Johnny Avila, and Danny Avila, the band has garnered a reputation for delivering deeply reflective, emotional, and relatable music. Their songs explore themes of isolation, guilt, mortality, and self-reflection, resonating with listeners through both their lyrical depth and the innovative use of a loud-quiet dynamic.

Insomnia’s music walks a delicate balance between accessibility and niche appeal, drawing influence from the iconic poppier grunge sound found in Nirvana’s Nevermind. Their debut release, White Noise, introduced their gritty, raw edge, while their first album, That’s It., cemented their place in the grunge scene. Their sophomore album, Idiosyncrasy, showcases the band’s maturity and willingness to push boundaries, weaving in heavier themes and layered sounds.

A key element in their live performances is the appearance of the Rat Pope, a symbolic mascot tied to their song “Easter Sunday.” This track, a fan favorite, critiques religious hypocrisy, with the Rat Pope embodying the tension between virtue and vice accompanied by the band’s missionary statement to “praise the mundane”. Insomnia’s stage presence, marked by intense emotion and raw power, draws audiences into their world of contradictions and cathartic release.

Having built a strong following, Insomnia’s future continues to shine bright with their ambitious music and desire to take the stage at larger venues.
